Definition
of Heating/Cooling Terms:
What does Puron mean?
Older cooling systems use refrigerants that contain CFCs and HCFCs,
the compounds responsible for ozone depletion. The U.S. is currently
phasing out production of those refrigerants. As a result, Carrier
introduced high-efficiency air conditioners to use the environmentally
sound, chlorine-free refrigerant, Puron.
What does AFUE mean?
Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency is the efficiency measurement
used for gas furnaces. Given in terms of percentages, this number
tells you how much of your fuel is being used to heat your home.
The remainder just goes up the chimney. The higher the AFUE rating,
the higher the efficiency.
What does SEER mean?
Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio is the measure of efficiency by
which cooling equipment is rated. This is the “miles-per-gallon”
measurement for your air conditioner. The higher the SEER number,
the greater the efficiency and the more energy (and dollars) you
will save.
What does HSPF mean?
Heating Seasonal Performance Factor is the efficiency measurement
used for heat pumps to gauge their heating efficiency (SEER is used
to determine how efficient heat pumps are at cooling). The higher
the number, the more efficient the unit.
What does ZEER mean?
Zoning Energy Efficiency Ratio is a number assigned to your total
system to indicate enhanced efficiency due to zoning. Each Zeer
point represents approximately 10% increased energy savings.
What does Green Seal mean?
Green Seal is the independent, nonprofit organization dedicated
to protecting the environment by promoting the manufacture and sale
of environmentally responsible consumer products. It sets environmental
standards and awards a “Green Seal of Approval” to products
that cause less harm to the environment than other similar products.
By setting standards for environmentally responsible products, Green
Seal seeks to reduce air and water pollution; cut the waste of energy
and natural resources; slow ozone depletion and the risk of global
warming; prevent toxic contamination; and protect fish and wildlife
and their habitats.
What does Energy Star mean?
Energy Star program is a voluntary partnership between the US Department
of Energy, the US Environmental Protection Agency, product manufacturers,
local utilities, and retailers. Partners help promote efficient
products by labeling with the energy star logo and educating consumers
about the benefits of energy-efficiency. By choosing Energy Star
labeled products, you will keep your utility bills down and help
the environment at the same time.
What is ComfortHeat Technology?
ComfortHeat Technology accurately predicts the need for heating
while cutting temperature swings in half, and provides a nearly
continuous flow of warmth in low-capacity operation for a steadier,
more consistent indoor temperature.
What is an Infinity System?
When a heat pump or air conditioner is combined with a variable-speed
furnace or fan coil, the revolutionary infinity system is the only
system in the industry that allows you to control temperature, humidity,
air quality, fan speed and ventilation; and even detects when your
air filter needs replacing. It’s so advanced; it automatically
adjusts to your system’s needs for peak efficiency and performance.
It’s the ultimate control center for all of your home system
components.
What is IdealHumidity Systems?
IdealHumidity systems automatically add or remove just the right
amount of moisture to keep your home comfortable. IdealHumidity
Systems can also help you save on energy costs. When the humidity
is right, you can feel comfortable at higher temperatures in the
summer and lower temperatures in the winter.
